Immersive Talk with ‘the dome.’ - Genelec

In a detailed discussion with Genelec, Gabriel Lundh, a Swedish producer, mixer, and sound designer, shares his insights on his transition into the realm of immersive audio, specifically his work with Dolby Atmos, from his studio, "the dome." in Stockholm. Lundh, who has been professionally engaged in music production and sound design for nearly seven years, highlights his journey from a small-town musician to a forefront runner in immersive audio technology.

At the heart of his studio are key equipment choices that support his immersive audio work, notably his MOTU 1248 sound card, Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) for system calibration, and an extensive Genelec speaker setup, which includes 8341s for L-C-R, 8330s and 8320s for side/rears and height, and two 7360s for LFE and bass management. This setup, complemented by another MOTU card, the 16A, for flexible audio/video routing, allows Lundh to create intricate mixes in Dolby Atmos, optimizing his workflow and ensuring precision in sound delivery.

Lundh's specialization in Dolby Atmos stems from its seamless integration with Pro Tools and the extensive support it receives from both the industry and Dolby, including studio calibration assistance from engineer David Ziegler. His inclination towards immersive audio was sparked by the realization that the music industry's potential was not fully tapped with predominantly 2-channel audio outputs. This led him to explore Dolby Atmos, encouraged by a colleague's inquiry about the format, which he saw as an opportunity to expand his creative horizons.

His approach to immersive mixing is meticulous, focusing on future-proofing his work and leveraging Dolby Atmos's capabilities to create consistent mixes across various playback systems, including studio monitors, soundbars, and through binaural rendering in Dolby Atmos and Apple Spatial Audio. Lundh avoids "illegal panning," using objects instead of panning within a bed to ensure clear binaural rendering by Dolby's algorithms.

Lundh's Genelec system plays a crucial role in his immersive projects, with GLM being a pivotal tool for system calibration and volume control. This setup, especially with the addition of a second subwoofer, meets Dolby's specifications and enhances his mixing capabilities.

His recent projects encompass a wide range of Swedish artists and contributions to the soundtrack for Fox's musical TV series "Monarch." Lundh's work in immersive audio not only benefits his business but also significantly contributes to his professional development, offering new perspectives on sound that transcend traditional stereo mixes.

Looking ahead, Lundh envisions broader applications of immersive audio in augmented and virtual realities and anticipates platforms like Spotify to embrace object-based audio. He views immersive audio as a future-facing investment, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize how listeners experience music and sound.
